Gustavus Fire Department Advisory Board

January 7th, 2008

Call to order 12:15

Minutes approved, with corrections to title and addition of Gus Martinez to roll call.

Roll Call: Corey Child, Mike Atkins, Wendy Bredow, Gus Martinez

Public attending, Mossy Mead

Minutes approved as read.  After the reading of the minutes Mossy explained that she had given Jake Ohlson a set of keys for her office since the GRVA files were in there and he is the treasure.  It was recommended by the board that the office access be limited to only Mossy and the Fire Department heads.  GRVA files will be moved to the lower office and secured in a locking file cabinet.

Current Business:

A)    Budget Category Allocation; Training is covered and there is no need to transfer costs to training.

B)    Inoculations:  Thanks Mossy for getting the message out to the new EMTS.  Costs for this are unknown.  Mossy will get with SERUMS and the clinic to find out what the costs are going to be and what SERUMS will reimburse for.  Mossy will confirm by phone for actual needs from current members.

C)    Funding Opportunities: Rural Fire Assistance Grant will be written by Corey. Gus will look into Fire Grants from NPS/Federal Gov. for gateway communities.

D)    Fire Station Siding:  Gus will update file for planning commission tonight.

E)     Fire Station Electric: Costs for all electrical work, (Fire Hall, Trailer etc.) has been quoted at $1065.40.  Motion made by Wendy to “hire John to do these repairs as he has outlined in his estimates, realizing that is just an estimate, it is funded out the line item “building maintenance and repair”.  Motion passed unanimously.

F)     Equipment Orders: Gus makes motion that “Mossy be allowed to purchase all items on the order list, minus the battery and pads for the AED.”  Motion passed unanimously.

G)    Fire Training: We have brought up our EMS response to a higher level.  We are not meeting the same need for our Structural Fire Fighting capabilities.  There is a need for a Fire Training Officer.  A call to the State should be made to find out if they would come out and certify our firefighters if they participate in an NPS Level one and two course.  Driver Operator class what is needed?  Separate from pump operations on the fire ground.  We will try to get a Pump Operators course, separate from actual driver course.

H)    New Board Member:  Application for appointment for Margaret needs to be added in lieu of Bruce Tedtsen.  Mossy will get the form to Margaret and processed for the city.

New Business:

A)    ARFF training.  We need to turn names to the State for potential candidates.  We will send four people to the training.  Corey will make some phone calls to determine who we will send.

Fire Chief Report:

A)    Air leak needs to get fixed on engine 7.  Bobby Chase is going to give a quote for repair.

B)    One fire call on December 22nd 1800 hours.

Next meeting scheduled:  Wed February 6th at 7:00 PM
