Library Board Meeting Minutes
10:AM April 16, 2010
Board Attendance: Artemis BonaDea, Jeneil Manchester, Eileen
Clark, Sylvia Martinez, George and Lynne Jensen (teleconference).
City Liaison Jim Mackovjak (not present)
Approval of Minutes: Motion passed.
Calendar Review and status report:
Septic tank evaluation to be done by Ponch Marchbanks.
PLA Grant is in to the state.
Travel grant is in to the city.
CIP grant for roof extension is in the city’s hands (grant
writer).
Budget updates for FY10 and FY11 given by Sylvia Martinez.
Summer Reading:
This item given top priority for “things to do.”
Coordinator and assistant need to be hired; so a job description
must be written
and posted. Posting must be approved by the
Mayor. This year both
employees will turn in timesheets. Budget allowances for
payroll are $2700 + taxes for coordinator (180 hours at $15/hour) and
$1000 + taxes for assistant (100 hours at $10/hour).
The Library’s supervisor for the Summer Reading Program is the
Public
Relations Librarian (Kate Boesser). The job description must
include the city’s requirements as per city’s website link.
Eileen will work on the job description and qualifications list for the
positions.
Maintenance:
Interior Lighting for center hall is completed. Conference room
and non-fiction
sections are next on the list.
Water Testing is still a work in progress (see job assignments).
Grants/Plans:
Tech Plan update has been submitted and accepted. We are in
compliance to
2013.
Fundraisers and Programs:
Bricks are on hold until Artemis returns.
No other fund raisers were discussed.
Upcoming programs: These include storyteller Brett Dillingham on
April 29 and AK
Poet Laureate Nancy Lord in mid-May. Costs for Dillingham are
being shared
With the NPS and the Gustavus School.
Travel Reports AKLA & PLA were given by Artemis, Eileen, and
Sylvia. All reported
high satisfaction with the conferences and what was gained at the
conferences.
The AKLA conference will be in Juneau for 2011. Jeneil
attended intern training
at the State Library. All participants discussed
possibilities of using information
gained at the conferences and training to develop programs in
Facebook use,
search engines, finding books, database use that would facilitate
learning styles
for teens and adults in the community.
Winter Librarian Hire:
This item is still under consideration. Number of hours for
both Sylvia’s and
Kate’s positions are okayed in the budget. We will check Mayor
Paul Berry about
leave of absence for employees and/or having a seasonal employee
status
(rather than a substitute).
Quarterly Report to City is due June and will be worked on by Kate and Sylvia.
