SPECIAL MEETING OF THE GUSTAVUS CITY COUNCIL OCTOBER 8, 2007
The Gustavus City Council held a special meeting as per AS 29.20.230(b) on October 8th to administer the oath of office to the new city council members elected at the regular election of the City on October 2, 2007. Councilman Klawunder and councilman Howell participated by teleconference.
William “Bill” Unkel and Paul Berry were sworn in by Mayor Marchbanks and thanked for choosing to participate in the election process.
Mayor Marchbanks then moved to the next item, electing a new mayor and vice-mayor. Mayor Marchbanks reminded the Council that she had commented after the election in 2007 she would step down at the end of the 2008 election year. She then nominated Ken Klawunder as mayor for the 2007-08 election year. The motion was seconded by Councilman Nixon. Discussion followed. The motion to elect Councilman Klawunder as mayor passed 7/0 with a roll call vote.
The floor was then opened for the election of a Vice-Mayor. Councilman Berry nominated Councilman Howell. Councilman Howell declined the nomination to serve as Vice-Mayor. Councilman Unkel asked for clarification on nominating a vice-mayor and stated he had served on many boards and would be available to serve as vice-mayor. Councilman Atkins nominated Councilman Unkel. Mayor Klawunder then nominated Councilman Marchbanks. At the point, Councilmen Unkel and Marchbanks left the building so that a candid discussion could take place between the remaining councilmen. Upon their return a roll-call vote was taken with each councilman declaring which councilman they would vote for. Councilman Marchbanks was elected Vice-Mayor with a 4/3 roll call vote.
There was a short speech given by Mayor Klawunder charging the new council with their responsibilities and on the upcoming meeting. The meeting was then adjourned.
