Resolution No. 2004-01

WHEREAS    The US Dept. of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service has recently Published 50 CFR Part 679 relating to changes to the Halibut and Sablefish IFQ program to allow community based non-profit Entities to buy and lease to local fishermen fisheries Quota, and

WHEREAS    Gustavus is listed in the rule as one of the 44 communities on the Gulf of Alaska that qualify under the provisions of the rules based on our population and access to the marine waters of the Pacific, and

WHEREAS    The City of Gustavus needs to encourage diversified economic sustainability, and

WHEREAS    The commercial fisheries off Alaska have a world renown and well deserved reputation as healthy and sustainably managed.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT THE CITY OF GUSTAVUS HEREBY DESIGNATES THE:

                   “ FAIRWEATHER FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL”

                   to be the duly authorized community non-profit entity to participate in the community quota share purchase program for Halibut and Sablefish IFQ as described in 50 CFR Part 679 amendment 66.
