Computer Task List
This document is a current task list for the computer systems at the library, not necessarily in priority order (though the most urgent tasks are marked in red). When a task is completed, it should be deleted from this list and a note should be made in the server log or the workstation log.
Tasks are divided into the following categories:
Network | Server | Workstation | Administration | Projects | Training
Network
These are tasks that apply to wiring, jacks, hubs, switches, Internet access, etc.
- Put network jack in work room
Server
These are tasks related to the configuration of the server. See the server log for completed tasks.
- Powerchute (Tom) -- Nate installed the cable but not the software.
- Upgrade to Acrobat 4
- Change default file location for office programs from personal to home folders.
- Set server so templates show for MS Office apps
- SP3 with 128-bit security. May be on the NT Option pack; otherwise needs to be downloaded. SP3 with 40-bit security is currently installed.
- Consider installing additional printer software (scanning and OCR especially).
- Give the school's IP subnet access to public and group folders.
- Xerox printer problems
Workstation
- Gateway computer needs attention: has major performance problem.
Administration
Finance and management
- FY99 Budget
- CIP Grant
Purchasing
- Scanner
- UPS for network hub
- WebBoard forum software
Documentation
- Maintain
Policy and Planning
- Update user agreement
- Review user groups and accounts (see partnerships, below).
Partnerships
What partners will be solicited and how will they be integrated into the gustavus domain? GCA seems like an obvious choice, and this is already started. Do we create separate user groups for partners and have them maintain their own information? Do they get their own virtual server? Do we provide services like e-mail accounts, newsgroups, or listservers for use by partner groups and the public?
Projects
This section contains tasks which involve using the technology infrastructure to carry out the library's mission or management.
- Database(s) for patrons, statistics, overdue books. Convert/build on what has already been done.
- Create database or spreadsheet for periodicals inventory and new materials
- Web-Based conferencing
- Web-based calendaring
- LDAP community Directory Server
- Letterhead for web and printing
Training
Training will be targeted at providing specific skills to specific user groups in order to enable them to carry out specific activities. The activities are divided into Activities for Library Patrons and Activities for Library Staff. See also library computer training.
