Exchange Server Set-Up

Began process of installing Exchange Server 2000 (trial version) on June 5, 2001.

  1. Stopped services Mdaemon, MDaemon-GCA, terminal services licensing, license logging service, SQLServerAgent, and MSSQLServerand.  disabled the MDaemon services.
  2. Made a backup with Retrospect to new backup set Exchange Server Setup.
  3. While the backup was happening, created contacts, users, and groups in Active Directory. These were the ones that were in MDaemon.
  4. Ran Setup and pretty much accepted all the defaults.
  5. In Exchange System Manager - Recipients - Recipient Policies, set default policy by adding gca.gustavus.ak.us domain.
  6. Mail-enabled all the users, contacts and distribution groups that will be receiving mail. Contacts without an exchange mailbox generate an undeliverable message if they're in a mail-enabled group that receives a message.
  7. In Internet Services Manager, renamed the default virtual directory public to shared to eliminate the conflict with the public folder in our electronic files. Allowed anonymous access to this folder so that users aren't prompted for a password to view information.
  8. Set Retrospect Exchange Agent so that at 1 am each day the database is copied to f:\program files\exchsrvr\backup. This folder should be included in the nightly retrospect workgroup backups.

Initial setup complete and tested 6/7/01.
