Reference Materials

A collection of online reference resources


Reference material consists of basic information such as the articles found in encyclopedias. Check with the desk librarian and check in the card catalog to find reference materials located in the Gustavus Public Library.

Note that there are also some CDs available with electronic encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference materials.

Grolier Online Grolier 7  Online reference resources and Encyclopedias. This is a subscription only service paid for in partnership by the Gustavus Library and the Chatham School District. (not available outside the library or school district). 
Encyclopedia Britannica Online Encyclopedia Britannica Complete, searchable text of the encyclopedia. This is a subscription-only service paid for by the Gustavus Public Library and the Chatham School District for its patrons and students (not available outside the library or school district). 
Databases for Alaskans Alaska State Library Several valuable full-text searchable databases of periodicals and other information available to Alaskans courtesy of the Alaska State Library.
How Stuff Works Marshall Brain Mechanical, electrical, biological, and even political questions answers might be found here. I found explanations for modems, trans fatty acids, what AM and PM are about and even how NATO works! Complex ideas are commuicated clearly so this could be a great resource for kid's reports or anything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask.
