How To Upload Using FTP

For more general instructions on using the library's Electronic File System, see the How To section of the Electronic Files page. Before saving files to the library server, please review the standards section.

General. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a method for copying files between computers connected to the Internet. For example, you can use it to copy files from your home computer to the library server using FTP. To do so, you need the following:

·        A library computer account (user name and password) with permissions for the area where you want to save your file

·        A computer with an Internet connection and an FTP software program installed.

  • Server (Host Name): gustavus.lib.ak.us

Internet Connection. If you are in Gustavus, your Internet connection will be with SEAKnet unless you are at Glacier Bay National Park or the Gustavus School.

FTP Software. Any FTP software will work. For example, use any of the following types of software to access the library server. For the quickest, easiest method, choose the first that matches your situation.

1) If you have Internet Explorer 5 or later, go to ftp://gustavus.lib.ak.us . To change files you must log in with your computer account by going to the File menu and choosing Log In As... -- after you have logged in you can rename, copy, delete, and drag files into the explorer window to upload them to the server.

2) If you have Microsoft Office 97 or later you can save files to an FTP site by going to the File menu and choosing Save As... -- From the Save In: drop-down list, choose FTP locations. Add a new location gustavus.lib.ak.us and enter your user name and password.

3) Download and use and FTP program such as WS-FTP (for Windows) or Fetch (for the MacIntosh). Instructions for obtaining and installing these programs are available on the Internet Alaska web site. Follow the instructions on the Internet Alaska web site except that the server (host name) is gustavus.lib.ak.us

If you have trouble, send and e-mail message to technicians@gustavus.lib.ak.us with a description of your problem.
