Gustavus Public Library: Computer System Documentation: Electronic Files:
Accessing Library Files with Windows Networking
For more general instructions on using the library's Electronic File System, see the How To section of the Electronic Files page. Before saving files to the library server, please review the standards section.
General. Windows networking allows your Windows computer to access files located on a Windows server computer as if they were on your own. To do so, you need the following:
· A library computer account with permissions for the area where you want to save your file
· A computer with Windows 95 or later, properly configured.
· an Internet connection properly configured.
Configuring Your Windows 95 or later computer:
1. Open Control Panel and double-click on the Network icon.
2. You need to have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed. If you do not, you must add it (add - client - Microsoft - Client for Microsoft Networks). While you're at it, make sure the only other services you have installed are TCP/IP Protocol and Dial-Up Adapter. Delete things like IPX/SPX protocol and NETBeui protocol unless you are connected to a Local Area Network (LAN).
3. Click OK and let the computer re-start. If you are asked to log on to Windows, be sure to use a name that is the same as the computer account you have at the library. The password can be different (you'll have a chance to re-enter it later).
Configuring your Internet connection:
1. Double-click to open My Computer, then Dial-Up Networking. Right-click on the connection that you use for connecting to SEAKnet, and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
2. Click the Server Types tab. While you're here, make sure that TCP/IP is the only protocol that's checked. Then click the TCP/IP Settings button.
3. For Primary WINS, enter 199.165.71.87
4. Click OK twice and close the Dial-Up Networking window.
Using Windows Networking
1. Connect to SEAKnet.
2. Start --> Run --> \\www
3. Click OK
You should see the shares on the library server, including group, home, and public. If so, you can proceed as if you were at the library.
Troubleshooting
You may have a password\account problem.
1. Start --> Shut Down --> Close all programs and log on as different user. (On a Windows 98 machine or Windows 95 with the IE4 Desktop Update, this option will not be available on the shut down menu. Instead, choose start --> Log Off)
2. For user name, enter the name of the account you have at the library.
3. You may have a problem locating the library server.
4. Start --> programs --> MS-DOS Prompt
5. Type in Ping www and press enter.
6. You should get either a Bad IP Address message or a reply. In the latter case, try start --> run --> \\www again.
