BIKE AND HIKE Program on Fridays: Come to the library every Friday at 10:00 (bring your permission slip on the first Friday, June 11, OR bring your parent to sign the permission slip!). We'll talk about what we're heading off to find: June 11 -- the golden (yellow) spruce near Gustavus Lake and possible beaver activity in ditch nearby. Bring a water bottle, compass, rain coat (if cloudy or rainy), whistle (to use when you discover something and to call others to you), and a nature journal if you have one (we'll get some new journals by July). There will be a front biker and a "sweep" biker at the back of the line. We'll be back by 12:00 noon, probably before, to look in our field guides and write down what we saw!
Call if you'd like to volunteer to read, make a presentation, lead a song or a hike, lead a craft project, bring snacks!...
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A READING BUDDY THIS SUMMER?
The Gustavus Public Library and the Gustavus School are sponsoring our yearly successful, award-winning Summer Reading Buddies Program. Last year, over 20 people volunteered to read with a child over the summer months, when reading skills tend to regress without consistent use.
We are again seeking volunteer teens and adults to read once a week through the summer with an emergent reader (pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grades) or a special needs student from the Gustavus community.
Reading session times (1 hour per week) are flexible according to your schedule. In the weekly session, the time will be divided between reading to your buddy and listening to your buddy read to you.
There will be a READING BUDDY TRAINING SESSION in early June. Time and date will be announced later. There will be a party for all reading buddy participants at the end of the summer.
Interested? Please call the Gustavus Library, (-2350).
We look forward to another great summer of reading!!

Help with Library "Weeding": Every year the Library works a schedule of "weeding" out old, unread, broken books to make way for new donations and purchases. This year, 2010, is a big year: We will be weeding all adult and juvenile books in the 000, 100, 200, 300, 500, 600, and 800's. It takes 2 people to agree to the letting go of any one book. If you would like to volunteer to help with this project, let us know at the front desk! We'd love your help.
APRIL LIBRARY STATISTICS: During April, 2010, we had 754 visits (adults, school children, preschoolers, jr/sr high, in-house computer users, library computer users), checked out 190 books, and 262 movies; for a total of 452 items. Programs included: Weekly K-2 library class; Grades 3-5 library class; daily after-school students; Presidents' Day Program with Ellie and Jess; a joyous EASTER program (THANKS to all bunnies and bunny helpers!!) and lots of lively discussions!
