Salmon River Wireless Coverage
Area covered by GCN wireless broadband service
The Open-Mesh
dashboard has a map showing the wireless nodes which transmit the
GCN wireless signal.
- The nodes use Wi-Fi technology (802.11 b/g) so any wireless-equipped device such as a laptop computer can connect to any node that is within range.
- The range is generally 150 to 300 feet when walls and vegetation is involved.
- The range may be half a mile or more if the node is visible (clear line of sight).
- At greater distances or with more obstacles the signal weakens. Signals too weak to be usable by laptop computer directly can be picked up by installing another node outdoors to boost the range.
- Desktop computers and other devices with an Ethernet connection but no wireless capability can be plugged directly into a node.
