Dial-Up Performance
Performance testing conducted for analog modems
The following form was used to gather performance statistics for dial-up modems. It is non-functional as of the move to the new city web site in 2007, but the results are still available.
We hear a few cases of inconsistent or poor performance on dial-up modem connections to the Gustavus Community Network, but it is very difficult to evaluate anecdotal reports.
You can help us document the problem (or lack thereof) by submitting your modem statistics. Just take the speed test, fill out the form below, and click the "submit" button.
- Make sure you aren't using your Internet connection for web browsing, sending and receiving e-mail, or anything else during the test. Make sure the graphs above have finished loading.
- Click this button:
. This will take you to a personal speed test
page. -
After you take the test, you can return to this page and enter the results from that test in the form below and answer as many optional questions as you wish, then submit the form.

Results from bandwidth test: kilobits per second (Kbps) (required) Your phone number: 697- (optional) Your modem connection speed: kilobits per second (Kbps) (optional). This is the speed that your computer reports your modem connected at. In Windows, hover over the icon next to your clock in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and read the "speed" as shown in the picture to the right. Note: if you have entered both your phone number and your modem connect speed before, you can enter just your phone number now. We will assume that a given phone number always gets the same connection speed unless you enter differently. Current bits per second in on satellite connection: k bits per second (Kbps) (optional). Read the In Current number from the bottom of the GCN WAN Utilization graph, above. Current number of modems in use: ports (optional). Read Ports in Use, Current from bottom of GCN PM3 Utilization graph, above. Any additional comments, questions, or
suggestions? Note: Your submission will be visible to the public. You can make it anonymous if you prefer by leaving your phone number blank and not identifying yourself in the comments. |
