Project Manager Hired

The State of Alaska awarded a CIP grant to the City of Gustavus to "Plan and design a model last-mile community broadband network." You may not know that on September 8 Gustavus mayor Jim Mackovjak signed a sole-source contract with Corvid Computing to manage the project. We have hit the ground running! Project Web Site Launched

Communication and information sharing is critical to any project, and more so to one that aspires to be a model for remote, underserved communities. That is why we created a web site dedicated to the Gustavus Broadband project. There you can see the current status and view background information about the project, as well as viewing the timeline and task list. More: http://bit.ly/r48JAh

Next Steps

By September 22, project manager Corvid Computing will deliver a draft Request for Proposals (RFP) to the GCN Board for their consideration. The RFP will be used to hire a planning consultant to develop the broadband plan for Gustavus. The RFP itself will serve as a "recipe" that other communities can follow to develop their own plans. Our goal is for the city council to approve and issue the RFP at its regular meeting on October 13. More: http://bit.ly/qn7dQk

Getting Future Updates

Under our project management contract, Corvid Computing will be sending updates on the status of the project at least every two weeks. Less often -- only when there are major developments such as upcoming public meetings or drafts on which we are actively seeking public comment -- we will send out notices to a wider audience of stakeholders. This message is a notice to announce the significant news that the project is now up and running. Please choose your communication preference to make sure you get the news you want, but not the chatter you may not want:

  • If you want to receive only NOTICES like this one, you should subscribe to the Gustavus NEWS list.
  • If you want to receive UPDATES every two weeks, make sure you are a member of the Gustavus Broadband Group, because that is where I will be sending updates (they will also go to the GCN Board and Grant Administrator Kapyrce Manchester). To view and optionally join the Gustavus Broadband group: http://bit.ly/puaNBr

As I hope these updates and the web site demonstrate, transparency and public involvement is one of my highest priorities for this project. There will be a public meeting and opportunities for formal participation once the planning contractor is hired, but your feedback and questions are welcome at any time. If you are willing to participate in public, the Gustavus Broadband group is a great place to post your questions and feedback: http://bit.ly/puaNBr . If you do not wish to have a public discussion, you can e-mail me directly. But please be aware that communications about the Gustavus Broadband Project are city records and thus subject to disclosure.

I look forward to working with the community to find the best solution to our growing information and communication infrastructure needs.

Sincerely,

Nate
